Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular safety of testosterone replacement therapy among aging men with low testosterone levels: A cohort study
American Journal of Medicine Apr 08, 2019
Loo SY, et al. - Among aging men with low testosterone levels, researchers evaluated the risk of ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, and myocardial infarction correlated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Between 1995 and 2017, they formed a cohort of men aged 45 years or older with low testosterone levels and no evidence of hypogonadotropic or testicular disease using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). There were 15,401 men in the cohort. Findings suggested that TRT might increase the risk of cardiovascular events, especially in the first 2 years of use, in aging men with low testosterone levels. They recommended that TRT should be initiated with caution among aging men with low testosterone levels in the absence of identifiable causes of hypogonadism.
