Cardiopulmonary exercise testing for surgical risk stratification in adults with congenital heart disease
Pediatric Cardiology Jun 14, 2018
Birkey T, et al. - Researchers evaluated the value of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) for evaluating risk in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery. For this analysis, charts on 75 ACHD patients who underwent CPET less than 12 months prior to major cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin were respectively reviewed. They collected demographic information, CPET results, and peri-operative surgical data. It was noted that post-operative complications were documented in 59% of patients. Findings revealed that while trends were seen between post-operative complications and some measurements of exercise capacity, none met statistical significance.
