Cardiometabolic risks and omega-3 index in recent-onset bipolar I disorder
Bipolar Disorders Mar 01, 2018
Wulsin LR, et al. - In a cohort of bipolar disorder patients with limited exposure to psychotropic medications, researchers characterized cardiometabolic risk factors, and determined their associations with mood symptoms and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) blood levels. Individuals with bipolar disorder here demonstrated no associations between the cardiometabolic parameters and Clinical Global Impression—Severity scale, manic (Young Mania Rating Scale [YMRS]), and depressive (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HDRS]) symptom ratings. These individuals also showed lower omega-3 PUFA levels. Observations here revealed an association between recent-onset medication-free bipolar disorder and higher triglyceride levels. Thereby suggesting early metabolic dysregulation prior to long-term psychotropic medication exposure.
