Cardiometabolic risk factors, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease progression in children
The Journal of Pediatrics Jul 09, 2018
Lalan S, et al. - In children enrolled in the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children study, researchers evaluated the pervasiveness of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and assessed its link with chronic kidney disease progression. They defined MetS as being overweight or obese and having ≥ 2 cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs). Seven hundred ninety-nine pairs of person-visits were involved in the final analysis. Findings demonstrated that children with chronic kidney disease had a high prevalence of MetS. Compared with children without multiple CMRFs and normal body mass index (BMI), children with normal BMI and incident multiple CMRFs and those with persistent MetS had approximately twice the odds of fast estimated glomerular filtration rate decline.
