Cardio-metabolic risk factors among young infertile women: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Feb 19, 2020

Mulder CL, Lassi ZS, Grieger ZA, et al. - Researchers investigated the levels of cardiovascular risk factors in infertile women vs fertile women. They conducted a systematic literature search using Pubmed, EMBASE and CINAHL, Scopus and additional manual and bibliographic searches for assessing studies that compared cardio-metabolic risk factors between fertile and infertile women of reproductive age. The analysis revealed statistically significantly higher BMI, increased TC, LDL-C, and TG among infertile women vs fertile women. In subgroup analysis, only women with polycystic ovarian syndrome showed increased TC, HDL-C, fasting glucose and fasting insulin compared with fertile women, while there was statistically significantly increased BMI, TG, and LDL-C in women with any indication of infertility vs fertile women. This study suggests that compared with fertile women, infertile women have a higher level of cardiometabolic risk factors. For infertile women and for those trying to conceive through medically assisted reproduction, this finding has clinical implications in general.
