Cardio and cerebrovascular risk markers in Parkinson disease – results from a case-control study
European Journal of Neurology May 30, 2021
Alves M, Lobo PP, Kauppila LA, et al. - Via this case-control study, researchers examined surrogate markers of cardio and cerebrovascular risk in Parkinson disease (PD). They compared PD cases selected from a Movement Disorders Unit with controls randomly invited from a primary healthcare center. Each arm consisted of 102 participants. The carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was the primary outcome. According to findings, CIMT did not differ between PD and controls. There was a higher frequency of carotid plaques and abnormal dipper profile, which gave rise to a hypothesis that patients suffering from PD are not protected from cardio and cerebrovascular disease.
