Cardiac biomarkers predict mortality in emergency patients presenting with atrial fibrillation
Heart Nov 15, 2018
Niederdöckl J, et al. - In this study involving consecutive patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) that led to presentation to a tertiary care university emergency department (2012-2016), researchers evaluated the utility of serum levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitive troponin T (hs-TnT) as predictors of mid-term mortality. They used multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models to estimate the mortality rates and hazards per 100 patient-years for NT-proBNP and hs-TnT serum levels in quintiles. Researchers did not observe any interaction between NT-proBNP and hs-TnT levels. Overall, in this patient population, elevated NT-proBNP and hs-TnT levels were found to be independently related to increased mid-term mortality.
