Cannabis use among a nationally representative cross-sectional sample of smokers and non-smokers in the Netherlands: Results from the 2015 ITC Netherlands Gold Magic Survey
BMJ Open Mar 08, 2019
Fix BV, et al. - Researchers investigated predictors of current (legal) cannabis use, and characterized methods of consumption among smokers and non-smokers. Data from 1,599 participants—including 1,003 current cigarette smokers, 283 former cigarette smokers, and 390 never cigarette smokers—were collected. Study participants reported their current (past 30-day) use of cigarettes and cannabis. The investigators used X2 and logistic regression analyses to evaluate relationships among combustible tobacco and cannabis use. Among current tobacco (or cigarette) smokers, past 30-day cannabis use was somewhat higher vs former or never smokers. The most commonly used form of cannabis for both current cigarette smokers and non-smokers were joints, which were often mixed with tobacco. This behavior may present unique health concerns for cannabis users who are not smoking cigarettes, as tobacco use may lead to dependence on nicotine. In addition, many non-cigarette cannabis users seem to be misclassified with regard to their actual exposure to tobacco/nicotine.
