Cannabis inhalation and voice disorders: A systematic review
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Oct 23, 2019
Meehan-Atrash J., et al. - Via identifying 6 clinical science studies and 13 basic science or animal studies, researchers conducted this systematic review to explore the connection between cannabis inhalation and voice disorders. Studies of candidates of legal age (≥ 18 years) who had cannabis-only clinical data and used nonsynthetic cannabinoids were involved. Findings suggested an association of cannabis-only smoking with changes in vocal fold appearance, respiratory symptoms, and negative lung function changes, particularly in heavy smokers. Information regarding cannabis consumption patterns seems important to the array of voice disorder patients. Reports also suggest that when suggested, cannabis smokers with a speech disorder must undergo laryngeal imaging and complete pulmonary function testing and receive education about methods of ingestion and their correlation with voice disorders.
