Candidemia in critically ill immunocompromised patients: Report of a retrospective multicenter cohort study
Annals of Intensive Care Jun 11, 2019
Ghrenassia E, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of immunocompromised critically ill patients with candidemia (n=121), researchers focused on the outcomes as well as on clinical phenotypes, Candida ecology, and factors related to death. A grim outcome was reported in relation to candidemia in immunocompromised critically ill patients. Although the prevalence of Candida non-albicans species was high, there was no association of C. species as well as its susceptibility, with the outcome. Conversely, an independent association of severity and preexisting allogeneic stem cell transplantation with poor outcome was observed. Three days following symptoms onset, antifungal therapy was started, despite antifungal prophylaxis and the use of preemptive antifungal therapy in neutropenic patients; this implies specific strategies for attenuating this delay are required.
