Siegel RL, et al. - Researchers provided estimates of new cancer cases and deaths in 2019 in the US and analyzed population-based data for cancer incidence through 2015 and for mortality through 2016. In the US, the estimates for new cancer cases and cancer deaths in 2019 are 1,762,450 and 606,880, respectively. Since 1991, cancer death rates have declined continuously and as a result of such a decline, an overall drop of 27% was seen, translating to approximately 2.6 million fewer cancer deaths. Despite a gradual narrowing of the racial gap in cancer mortality, widening of socioeconomic inequalities have been reported, with the most preventable cancers seeing the most notable gaps. The observed mortality rates in the poorest counties vs the most affluent counties were 2-fold higher for cervical cancer and 40% higher for male lung and liver cancers during 2012-2016. Focusing on disadvantaged groups, a broader application of existing cancer control knowledge would be promising.
