Cancer stage and pack-years, but not p16 or HPV, are relevant for survival in hypopharyngeal and laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology May 16, 2018
Dahm V, et al. - Experts evaluated the role of HPV and p16 in hypopharyngeal and laryngeal carcinomas. In patients with an early tumour stage compared to advanced carcinoma, significantly better overall survival was seen. In hypopharyngeal and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients, tumour stage and nicotine exposure seemed to have the highest effect on survival. For p16 positive or HPV positive patients with hypopharyngeal or laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, no evidence of a better HPV was seen. A minor role of HPV was found in these entities of head and neck carcinoma.
