Cancer risk in patients with Parkinson’s disease in South Korea: A nationwide, population-based cohort study
European Journal of Cancer Jul 19, 2019
Park JH, et al. - In patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Korea, researchers evaluated the overall cancer risk as well as the risk regarding specific cancers. For this nationwide population-based cohort study, 52,009 patients diagnosed with PD between 2010 and 2015 and 260,045 people without PD were identified using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Database. Previously diagnosed cancer patients were excluded. To assess the link between PD and cancer, Cox proportional hazards regression models were used. Investigators found that patients with PD had a lower overall risk of cancer and lower risk of particular cancers. Patients with PD have a significantly lower risk of laryngeal cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, leukemia, uterine cervical cancer and prostate cancer. This large cohort study revealed that, contrary to the results of the recent Asian study, patients with PD were less likely to develop cancer than patients without PD in Korea. Despite variations in ethnicity and environment, the findings were compatible with those from prior Western studies.
