Cancer risk in Parkinson disease: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Neurology Sep 16, 2021
Leong YQ, Lee SWH, Ng KY, et al. - The meta-analysis found that those with Parkinson disease (PD) had decreased rates of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological cancers, but higher risks of melanoma and brain cancer.
From the commencement of the database to June 4, 2021, four databases were searched for research that looked at the relationship between PD and cancer incidence.
Forty papers were included, including 11 case-control studies, two nested case-control studies, 22 cohort studies, and five cross-sectional studies.
PD patients exhibited lower chances of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological malignancies when compared with controls.
PD patients, on the other hand, had an increased risk of melanoma and brain cancer.
There was no link discovered between PD and the risk of female cancers.
Subgroup analysis observed negative relations between PD patients and risks of colon cancer, rectal cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
