Cancer prevalence higher in stroke patients than in the general population: The Dutch String-of-Pearls Institute (PSI) Stroke study
European Journal of Neurology Sep 02, 2019
Wilbers J, Sondag L, Mulder S, et al. - In this multicenter cohort study, researchers evaluated the prevalence of cancer and its features in patients with ischemic stroke vs cancer prevalence in the general population. The sample consisted of 2,736 patients presenting with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. Cancer prevalence was evaluated by interview and verified by reviewing all medical records. Overall, an increased prevalence of cancer was seen in stroke patients vs the general population for specific types of cancer. Central nervous system, head and neck, lower respiratory, and urinary tract were cancer types that exhibited an increased prevalence in stroke patients. Between patients with and without cancer, there was no difference in stroke characteristics. In survivors of CNS, head and neck, lower respiratory and urinary tract cancers, researchers should assess if treatment of cardiovascular risk factors prevents stroke.
