Cancer pain in people with intellectual disabilities: Systematic review and survey of healthcare professionals

Millard SK, et al. - Researchers investigated the current knowledge concerning cancer pain in people with intellectual disabilities. Further, they sought to provide specific recommendations to improve this knowledge. On searching PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, they identified that specific and comprehensive research on this topic within the scientific literature is lacking. On performing an anonymous online survey of Dutch healthcare professionals, 63 healthcare professionals were assessed who had encountered cancer in people with intellectual disabilities; these healthcare professionals reported challenges recognizing, assessing, and treating the cancer pain in these cases. Inherent difficulties regarding the complex interplay of comorbidities and communication issues in these people may explain the findings.
