Can the introduction of single-use flexible ureteroscopes increase the longevity of reusable flexible ureteroscopes at a high volume centre?
World Journal of Urology Aug 27, 2021
Ventimiglia E, Smyth N, Doizi S, et al. - After the introduction of single use flexibles ureteroscopes (su-fURS), the life cycle of reusable fURS (re-fURS) grew by 40%. The use of ten or more su-fURS each life cycle was linked to enhanced re-fURS survival.
At the centre, five different re-fURSs were used for a total of 1,820 usages and 40 breakages that required reconditioning.
Before breaking, the overall mean (SD) number of usages was 40 (22).
Following the introduction of su-fURS, the mean (SD) number of re-fURS usages increased from 35 (22) to 49 (20), an increase of 40%.
The relationship between the intensity of su-fURS usage and the survival of reusable scopes revealed a linear survival increase after 10 or more su-fURS scopes were used per life cycle.
