Can procalcitonin be used as a reliable marker for infectious fever in patients with intracranial hemorrhage?
World Neurosurgery Jun 06, 2018
Gautam-Goyal P, et al. - Whether or not procalcitonin (PCT) levels are different among infected vs non-infected febrile patients with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) was investigated. Researchers performed a study that is one of the largest to date in patients with ICH. In this prospective observational study, 104 patients with ICH and fever above 38.3 C admitted to ICUs (Intensive Care Units) of a tertiary care hospital were enrolled. Results showed that PCT levels were higher in patients with ICH and infections, and could be a useful marker to differentiate between infectious and non infectious etiologies of fevers in these patients.
