Can locking plate fixation of symphyseal disruptions allow early weight bearing?
Injury Feb 26, 2020
Kankanalu P, et al. - Researchers sought to establish the effectiveness of locking plate fixation for pubic symphysis disruption in allowing patients to mobilize weight-bearing immediately after surgery. They retrospectively analyzed a prospectively collected database from a single center and included 46 patients (F:M 8:38) with a mean age of 46 years (range 14 to 74 years) from 2008 to 2017. The patients had a mean radiological follow-up period of 31 weeks; evidence of radiological failure was noted in 13 (28%) patients. One (2%) patient underwent revision. Four (8%) patients underwent removal of metalwork. In this series of patients, the use of locking plate for pubic symphyseal diastasis was identified as safe and effective in enabling patients to weight bear early. They observed a low complication rate and a low necessity for re-operation.
