California and federal school nutrition policies and obesity among children of Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Filipino origins: Interrupted time series analysis
PLoS Medicine May 30, 2021
Matsuzaki M, Sánchez BN, Rebanal RD, et al. - Using an interrupted time series design with FitnessGram data from 2002 to 2016, researchers sought to assess the correlation of the California state school nutrition policies for competitive food and beverages and the federal policy for school meals (Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA 2010)) with overweight/obesity among Pacific Islander (PI), Filipino (FI), and American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) students. The current study discovered evidence of positive associations between state and federal school nutrition policies and trends in overweight/obesity prevalence. However, the prevalence of overweight/obesity among PI and AIAN students, as well as FI boys, remained high. There are still significant racial/ethnic disparities between these minority subgroups and their White peers. Additional strategies are required to lessen childhood obesity and related disparities among these understudied racial/ethnic populations.
