Calculated plasma volume status and outcomes in patients undergoing coronary bypass graft surgery
Heart Mar 07, 2019
Maznyczka AM, et al. - In view of the correlation of congestion with worse outcomes in critically ill surgical patients and the difficulty faced in quantifying it noninvasively, researchers investigated if plasma volume status (PVS), measured preoperatively using a validated formula that computes percentage change from ideal plasma volume (PV) could have prognostic value following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. In this retrospective cohort study, mean PVS was −8.2±9% in 1,887 patients (mean age 67±10 years; 79% male; median European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation 4). They noted worse inpatient outcomes following CABG in correlation with higher PVS values calculated from weight and hematocrit. As per findings, PVS could improve risk stratification, justifying further inquiries into the potential clinical value of PVS-guided management in these patients.
