C-reactive protein or erythrocyte sedimentation rate results reliably exclude invasive bacterial infections
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Nov 14, 2018
Paydar-Darian N, et al. - Researchers investigated the link between invasive bacterial infections (IBIs) and C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Participants included 1,460 febrile individuals aged < 21 years who presented to a single emergency department between 2012 and 2014 for evaluation of fever of < 14 days' duration and had both CRP and ESR obtained. According to findings, IBI was unlikely with either a normal CRP or ESR. Thus, while awaiting the results of bacterial cultures, inflammatory markers could assist in clinical decision-making.
