C reactive protein level as a marker for dyslipidemia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome: Results from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

BMJ Open Sep 06, 2019

Jeong H, Baek SY, Kim SW, et al. - A retrospective, cross-sectional survey study on a total of 5,887 (weighted n = 40,251,868) individuals aged 19 years or older, recruited from the 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, was done in order to assess the correlation between plasma CRP levels and cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, malignancies and other comorbidities. In individuals with cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and several cancers, including gastric, colon, breast and cervix, the mean plasma CRP levels were higher than in the general population. Following adjustment for socioeconomic and lifestyle features, plasma CRP concentration was related to the heightened prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. No important relation between plasma CRP level and cancers were noted. Thus, in the general population, plasma CRP was related to an elevated risk of dyslipidemia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
