C-reactive protein is an independent predictor for hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after liver transplantation
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 04, 2019
Meischl T, et al. - The association of elevated C-reactive protein (CRP; ≥1 vs <1 mg/dL) with recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and overall survival (OS) after liver transplantation (LT) was evaluated in patients treated with resection or non-surgical treatment. Researchers retrospectively analyzed 216 HCC patients undergoing orthotopic deceased donor LT at the Medical University of Vienna. Among these, 70 patients (32.4%) displayed elevated CRP (≥ 1 mg/dL). A CRP ≥ 1 mg/dL was noted to be an independent risk factor for HCC recurrence with a 5-year recurrence rate of 27.4% vs. 16.4% in multivariate analysis. Patients with normal vs elevated CRP levels showed similar OS.
