Shapiro AE, et al. - Researchers evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP) as a screening test for active tuberculosis (TB) in HIV-infected ambulatory adults. They recognized CRP was sensitive but was substantially more specific than TB symptom screening in HIV-infected outpatients. Same number of HIV-associated TB cases could be identified using CRP as a screening tool to exclude active TB, but its use reduces the use of diagnostic sputum testing in TB-endemic regions.
