C-reactive protein as a prognostic factor in intensive care admissions for sepsis: A Swedish multicenter study
Journal of Critical Care Mar 08, 2020
Koozi H, et al. - Among ICU patients who encountered sepsis, researchers evaluated C-reactive protein (CRP) on ICU admission as a Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS)-3 independent risk marker for short-term mortality and length of stay (LOS). The participants were retrospectively identified from four southern Swedish hospitals and were split into a low CRP group (< 100 mg/L) and a high CRP group (> 100 mg/L) according to admission CRP level. According to the findings, an increased risk of ICU and 30-day mortality and prolonged LOS among survivors was reported in correlation with an admission CRP level > 100 mg/L, this was true regardless of morbidity measured with SAPS-3. Therefore, CRP may afford a simple, early marker for prognosis in ICU admissions for sepsis.
