Burned patients who die from causes other than the burn affect the model used to predict mortality: a national exploratory study
Burns Aug 26, 2017
Lauren Klein et al. – This study examined the causes of death in patients who die with Baux scores (sum of age and total body surface area burned [TBSA %]) of <100 to understand the lower sensitivity of the score to predict the mortality. In this study, among all patients who died, 25% had a Baux score <100. However, most of these deaths were due to reasons other than the burn, which explains the low sensitivity of score as factors other than age and TBSA % played a role in death.
