Burden of respiratory syncytial virus infection during the first year of life
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Jan 06, 2021
Thomas E, Mattila JM, Lehtinen P, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective study to analyze the burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection during the first year of life. They recruited 431 newborn infants and followed them for a 10-month period (September-June). They examined the infants and obtained nasopharyngeal specimens for the detection of RSV during each respiratory illness. The seasonal incidence rate of RSV illness was 328.4 per 1,000 among 408 active participants. During the first year of life, the outpatient burden of RSV is heavy on infants. Acute otitis media is a common complication of RSV and should be included in the cost-effectiveness analysis of infant RSV infection prevention or treatment.
