Burden of ischemic stroke in patients with congenital heart disease: A nationwide, case‐control study
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 23, 2021
Giang KW, Fedchenko M, Dellborg M, et al. - A nationwide, case‐control study was performed to describe the burden of ischemic stroke in patients with congenital heart disease. Between 1930 and 2017, researchers distinguished all patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) in Sweden who were born using the Swedish National Patient Register and the Cause of Death Register. They randomly selected ten controls without CHD from the general population and matched for birth year and sex for each patient with CHD. Between January 1970 and December 2017, the follow‐up of the study population was performed. The study found that in comparison with matched controls, patients with CHD had a 5‐fold higher risk of developing index IS. Nevertheless, compared with controls, the risk of recurrent IS stroke and all‐cause mortality were 34% and 47% lower, respectively, in patients with CHD.
