Burden of cardiovascular diseases in China, 1990-2016: Findings from the 2016 Global Burden of Disease Study
JAMA Cardiology May 08, 2019
Liu S, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from the 2016 Global Burden of Disease Study, to assess the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) from 1990 to 2016 in China, both at the national and province level. The age-standardized prevalence rate of CVD overall increased significantly from 1990 to 2016; rates for ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, and endocarditis increased as well. Considerable decrease in the CVD burden was seen from 1990 to 2016 nationally, as measured by age-standardized DALY rate, with a larger decrease seen in women vs men. As for the relative burden of CVD, an increase in the gap between provinces has been reported from 1990 to 2016, with a faster reduction in economically developed provinces. Findings call for geographically targeted considerations to tailor future strategies to enhance CVD health throughout China and in specific provinces.
