Buprenorphine to reverse respiratory depression from methadone overdose in opioid-dependent patients: A prospective randomized trial
Critical Care Feb 13, 2020
Zamani N, et al. - In this prospective randomized trial, researchers contrasted the safety and effectiveness of buprenorphine and naloxone in reversing respiratory depression in methadone-poisoned opioid-dependent individuals. For this investigation, they randomized individuals (n = 85) with methadone-induced respiratory depression to receive naloxone (titrated doses), or lower or higher doses of buprenorphine (10 μg/kg or 15 μg/kg). Those receiving buprenorphine did not experience any serious complications or deaths. In overdosed opioid-dependent patients, buprenorphine seems to be a safe and effective substitute for naloxone.
