Kim HHS, et al. - Among youth residing in less developed parts of the world, researchers studied the connection between bullying victimization, measured at individual and school levels, and suicide intent and plan. They used multilevel modelling to estimate the degree to which school-level bullying has an independent impact on the two suicide measures and how it moderates the impact on contemplating and planning suicide of individual-level victimization. Data were derived from the Global School-based Student Health study (2000–2012), which includes probability samples of adolescents in low- and middle-income nations. By fitting three-level mixed effects models, the authors discovered that adjusting for personal experience of victimization, greater school-level prevalence of bullying has a positive independent link with suicide plan, but not ideation. In the context of a higher proportion of physical violence among students and peer hostility on campus, the relationship is also less pronounced. According to results, the majority of previous studies narrowly describes the connection at the individual (eg, student) level between bullying and suicide. This research demonstrates that in order to better understand the conditions under which youth think about and/or plan to inflict lethal self-harm, the school context (eg, proportion of bullied peers) needs to be incorporated into the analysis.
