Brown adipose tissue, adiposity and metabolic profile in preschool children

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jun 24, 2021

Tint MT, Michael N, Sadananthan SA, et al. - Researchers sought to examine the influence of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in thermoneutral conditions on adiposity and metabolic profile in Asian preschool children. In total, 198 children aged 4.5 years from a prospective birth cohort study, Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes were successfully analyzed with water-fat MRI of the supraclavicular-axillary fat depot. A higher percentage BAT is linked to a more favorable metabolic profile. As a result, BAT may play a role in the pathophysiology of obesity and related metabolic disorders. The observed ethnic and gender differences suggest that the protective effect of BAT may differ between groups.
