Campo P, et al. - Researchers determined if a bronchial counterpart of local allergic rhinitis (LAR) exists. Taking into account clinical history, skin prick test/serum specific IgE (sIgE), and nasal allergen provocation test (NAPT), they divided patients into the LAR, allergic rhinitis (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) phenotypes. A methacholine test (MT) was performed in 28 LAR, 18 AR and 19 NAR patients who themselves reported bronchial symptoms indicative of asthma and 8 healthy controls (HC), prior to (Visit 1) and 24 hours following (Visit 3) a bronchial provocation test with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (BPT-DP) (Visit 2). Assessments were made for immune cell populations, tryptase, ECP and sIgE by analyzing induced sputum and peripheral blood taken after each MT. The existence of a novel asthma phenotype (local allergic asthma) was suggested. Absence of systemic atopy and positivity to BPT with allergen defined this new asthma phenotype.
