Breast reconstruction in an underserved population: A retrospective study
Annals of Surgical Oncology Nov 13, 2018
Wang MM, et al. – In this study, researchers investigated the impact of patient ethnicity and insurance status in a medically underserved population on post-mastectomy reconstruction. For this purpose, they retrospectively analyzed 220 mastectomy patients out of 750 patients included in the database of Bellevue Hospital Center, a safety-net hospital (New York City, NY), between January 2010 and December 2015. Compared with the national average, they noted higher rates of breast reconstruction in this underserved patient population, and found that institutional availability of patient navigators and preoperative counseling may contribute to more equal access to breast reconstruction.
