Breast MRI BI-RADS 3: Impact of patient-level factors on compliance with short-term follow-up
Journal of the American College of Radiology Oct 15, 2019
Ambinder EB, Myers K, Panigrahi B, et al. - Given that patients with a finding of less than 2% chance of breast cancer are given a BI-RADS 3 assessment on breast MRI and are typically recommended to return for a 6-month follow-up MRI. in this study, researchers sought to determine the factors associated with compliance among these patients. From February 1, 2011, to June 30, 2016, they identified 190 women with a BI-RADS 3 assessment on MRI. Among these women, 106 (57.3%) were compliant with the recommended follow-up MRI, 34 (18.4%) had delayed follow-up, and 45 were noncompliant (24.3%). Compliance was identified to be significantly correlated with the reason for examination, a personal history of breast cancer and a family history of breast cancer. Data here suggest that additional support and resources may benefit the subsets of patients and may help increase overall compliance and timely compliance.
