Breast fibroadenomas are not associated with increased breast cancer risk in an African American contemporary cohort of women with benign breast disease
Breast Cancer Research Aug 16, 2018
Shaik AN, et al. - Researchers examined a contemporary cohort of women with benign breast disease to determine if breast cancer risk related to fibroadenoma differs for African American women, a population reported to be more likely to present with fibroadenomas. Women aged 18 to 84 years at the time of benign breast biopsy were eligible for this study. They reported a more frequent occurrence of fibroadenomas in biopsies of younger women. In the presence of a fibroadenoma, the chances of occurrence of other types of benign breast lesions were less. Women with fibroadenomas vs the general population, unlike women with other benign lesions, did not demonstrate an increased risk of developing breast cancer. In comparison to biopsies without a fibroadenoma, a reduced risk of breast cancer was reported in relation to biopsies that indicated a fibroadenoma, even after adjusting for age at biopsy, proliferation, and atypia.
