Breast cancer-specific survival by clinical subtype after seven years follow-up of young and elderly women in a nationwide cohort
International Journal of Cancer Nov 01, 2018
Johansson ALV, et al. - Between age and tumor subtype (prognostic factors for breast cancer survival), experts evaluated which matters the most in young and elderly women. They included 21,384 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 20-89 years of age from 2005-2015 in the Cancer Registry of Norway. They noted an association of young age with increased breast cancer-specific mortality among luminal A-like subtype, while in all subtypes, old age was related to increased mortality. Strong independent prognostic factors were age and subtype. Also, after adjustment for subtype, results demonstrated that the elderly always did worse. Among young, the higher breast cancer-specific mortality was largely explained by tumor-associated factors (subtype, grade and stage).
