Breast cancer risk in transgender people receiving hormone treatment: Nationwide cohort study in the Netherlands
BMJ May 21, 2019
de Blok CJM, et al. - Incidence and features of breast cancer in transgender people in the Netherlands vs the general Dutch population was assessed by the authors in 1,229 adult trans men (female sex assigned at birth, male gender identity) and 2,260 adult trans women (male sex assigned at birth, female gender identity) receiving gender affirming hormone treatment. A lower risk of breast cancer in trans men vs cisgender women and a higher risk in trans women vs cisgender men was seen in this study. Breast cancer risk increased during a comparatively brief duration of hormone treatment in trans women with a a more female pattern emerging. For transgender people using hormone treatment, breast cancer screening guidelines for cisgender people were adequate.
