Breast cancer in South-Eastern European countries since 2000: Rising incidence and decreasing mortality at young and middle ages

European Journal of Cancer Sep 09, 2017

Dimitrova N, et al. - This paper contemplated the variations in breast cancer incidence and mortality trends in South-Eastern Europe, detailed by age. The differences in the incidence trends reflected the impact of risk factors and early detection activities (screening). The mortality rates were mostly decreasing, possibly as a result of improved cancer care and an introduction of more effective systemic treatment regimens. However, the worrying, increasing mortality trends in the 55-plus age groups in some countries had to be targeted by health professionals and policymakers. A need arose for significant investments by the cancer registries (CRs), for evaluating and monitoring the effects of cancer control activities in the region.
