Brain metastases from biliary tract cancers: A case series and review of the literature in the genomic era
The Oncologist Nov 20, 2019
D'Andrea MR, Gill CM, Umphlett M, et al. - In order to determine clinical features related to poor prognosis for patients with brain metastases (BMs) from biliary tract cancer (BTC), researchers conducted a retrospective review. For patients who suffered BMs from BTC and were treated at Mount Sinai Hospital from 2000 to 2017, electronic medical records were analyzed. They evaluated data about patient features, magnetic resonance imaging findings, treatment regimens, and clinical results. Overall 1,910 patients with BTC were found. The development of BMs was reported in 9 patients, with an incidence of 0.47%. Of these nine patients, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma was present in six, extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in two, and gallbladder cancer in one. From the time of BM diagnosis, the median overall survival of 3.8 months was estimated. Findings revealed that BMs rarely developed from BTC; however, the observed prognosis was less than 4 months. Within 2 years of primary diagnosis, BM diagnosis can occur.
