Brain atrophy is associated with disability progression in patients with MS followed in a clinical routine
American Journal of Neuroradiology Dec 19, 2018
Ghione E, et al. - Researchers analyzed 1815 participants with 11,794 MR imaging brain scans to evaluate the feasibility of brain atrophy measurement and its relation with disability succession in subjects with MS (followed for 5 years in a clinical routine). They measured whole-brain volume changes using SIENA/SIENAX on 3D T1WI and percentage lateral ventricle volume change using NeuroSTREAM on T2-FLAIR. They observed disability progression associated with 21.9% annualized reduction in percentage brain volume change and normalized brain volume and a 33% increase in lateral ventricle volume in MS indicating the lateral ventricle volume assessment as the most worthwhile one.
