Brachial and cerebrovascular functions are enhanced in postmenopausal women after ingestion of chocolate with a high concentration of cocoa
The Journal of Nutrition Aug 14, 2017
Marsh CE, et al. – Researchers performed this study in healthy postmenopausal women to assess their cerebrovascular function and cognition subsequent to intake of chocolate containing distinct concentrations of cocoa. In study participants, enhanced vascular endothelial function, reflected by improved flow-mediated dilation (FMD), was apparently seen as a result of consumption of chocolate containing high concentrations of cocoa. Between conditions, no difference was noted in cognitive function outcomes; however, consumers of milk chocolate (MC) and dark chocolate (DC) showed lower cerebral blood flow responses during these cognitive tasks. These outcomes indicated that chocolate containing high concentrations of cocoa may modify the association between cerebral metabolism and blood flow responses in postmenopausal women.
