Botulinum toxins type A (Bont-A) in the management of lower limb spasticity in children: A systematic literature review and bayesian network meta-analysis

Journal of Child Neurology Mar 01, 2019

Guyot P, et al. - In this systematic literature review and Bayesian network meta-analysis, researchers assessed the effectiveness and safety of abobotulinumtoxinA vs other botulinum neurotoxins type A (BoNT-As) in pediatric spasticity, which affects more than 2.5 million children worldwide. The results analyzed included Modified Ashworth Scale, Tardieu Scale (TS) spasticity grade, and Goal Attainment Scale (standard mean difference only) at 12 weeks following injection and adverse events during the study period. According to findings, abobotulinumtoxinA gave significant or numerical effectiveness advantages on tone (Modified Ashworth Scale) and functional results (Goal Attainment Scale) in pediatric lower limb spasticity, and similar effectiveness on Tardieu Scale spasticity grade. In terms of tolerability, AbobotulinumtoxinA was comparable to onabotulinumtoxinA. The context of heterogeneity and sparsity of the evidence base should be considered when interpreting the results.
