Both lean and fat body mass associate with blood pressure
European Journal of Internal Medicine May 18, 2021
Korhonen PE, Mikkola T, Kautiainen H, et al. - Researchers investigated the relative importance of the two components of body mass index, fat mass and lean body mass index, on blood pressure (BP) levels. Participants were 534 persons (mean age 61 ± 3 years) who had no cardiovascular medication. Among these, body composition was evaluated with bioimpedance and 24 hour ambulatory BP measurements were recorded. Independently of age, gender, smoking, and leisure-time physical activity, a positive, small to moderate link with all 24 hour BP components was demonstrated by both fat mass index and lean mass index. Overall, adult lean body mass was revealed as a significant determinant of BP levels with an equal, although small to moderate magnitude as fat mass. Cardiovascular health may not benefit from a relatively high amount of muscle mass.
