Borderline ovarian tumors share familial risks with themselves and invasive cancers
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Oct 20, 2018
Zheng G, et al. - Researchers used 16.1 million individuals in the Swedish Family-Cancer Database to understand histology-specific familial links among borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) and if they have links to any invasive cancers. Taking into account both BOT and any invasive cancers in first-degree relatives (parents or siblings) and family history of BOTs, the familial risks for overall or histology-specific patients with BOT, as well as for invasive cancers, were determined. According to findings, BOTs may share susceptibility with themselves and a number of invasive cancers. In association with papillary BOT in first-degree relatives, an increased risk of having the same type of BOT was observed. Most consistent familial associations shown by BOTs were with colorectal, ovarian, pancreatic, lung, and bone cancers, and with leukemia.
