Bone turnover markers do not predict fracture risk in type 2 diabetes
Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Aug 04, 2020
Napoli N, Conte C, Eastell R, et al. - Given that BMD underestimates fracture risk in type 2 diabetes (T2D), however, the predictive role of bone turnover markers (BTMs) on fracture risk in T2D was not examined, researchers conducted this case‐cohort study to ascertain if BTMs predict incident fractures in patients with T2D. Data were used from the Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study of well‐functioning older adults, aged 70–79 years at baseline (April 1997–June 1998). In total, 690 individuals (223 cases, of whom 41 were in the sub‐cohort) were included in analysis. According to findings, BTMs did not predict incident fracture risk in T2D but were linked modestly to non-diabetes fracture risk.
