Bone mineral density and estimated hip strength in men with anorexia nervosa, atypical anorexia nervosa and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
Clinical Endocrinology Mar 05, 2019
Schorr M, et al. - In men with anorexia nervosa (AN), atypical AN (ATYP), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), researchers examined the prevalence and determinants of low bone mineral density (BMD) and estimated hip strength. Participants in the study included 103 men aged 18-63 years: AN (n=26), ARFID (n=11), ATYP (n=18), and healthy volunteers (HC; n=48). Investigators found that mean body mass index was lowest in men with AN and ARFID, higher in those in the ATYP group, and highest in men with HC. Mean BMD Z-scores at spine and hip were lower in AN and ARFID groups, but not ATYP than HC. According to findings, men with AN, ARFID, and ATYP are at risk for low BMD. Men with these eating disorders who are low weight or low in muscle mass, have long duration of illness, and/or are deficient in vitamin D may be particularly at high risk.
