Bone metastasis predicts poor prognosis of patients with brain metastases from colorectal carcinoma post aggressive treatment

Cancer Management and Research Aug 16, 2018

Duan H, et al. - In this retrospective review of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with brain metastasis (BM), researchers looked prognostic factors in patients treated aggressively. Participants were a total of 78 CRC patients with confirmed BM. At the time of their BM diagnosis, 68 of them had extracranial metastases. Lung, followed by liver and bone were documented as the most common sites of extracranial metastases. Frequently, a very poor prognosis was observed in CRC patients having BM. Response to aggressive treatment was observed in those with good performance status and few brain lesions, while relatively dismal survival rates were reported in those with bone metastasis at the time of diagnosis of BM, which did not change even with aggressive treatment.
