Bone metastases from thyroid carcinoma of follicular origin: A single institutional experience
European Thyroid Journal Dec 17, 2018
Matta-Coelho C, et al. - From 1991 to 2017, authors analyzed 86 cases (median age, 64 years) already diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma of follicular origin and bone metastases (BM) at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG), Lisbon, Portugal to delineate clinical features and treatment approaches. They recorded BM as the initial presentation of thyroid cancer in 36% of cases, multiple bone involvements in 59.3% and papillary carcinoma as the most frequent histological type (reflecting a more similar behavior to follicular carcinoma than the classic variant) in 47.7%. They also noted skeletal-related events (SRE) in 76.7% of the subjects with radiotherapy (66.3%) as the most frequent one. They initiated bisphosphonates treatment in 19.8% of cases. No differences in 5- or 10-year specific survival regarding gender, the occurrence of SRE, or histological type was observed.
